Jewel Sasser, a cherished member of the Cedar Grove Community and a lifelong
servant of faith at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, passed away peacefully at the age of
86.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Thursday, September 18, at Cedar Grove Baptist
Church with internment following in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends one
hour prior to the service.
Jewel was born on August 24, 1939, the second of two daughters to the late A.C. and
Ovie B. Sasser. She embraced life with enthusiasm and a fearless spirit matched by her
candid and humorous nature. Her special mix of charm and wit was reflected even in
her final days.
Jewel spent a career at Andalusia Alatax where she worked her way to the role of
supervisor. A master of fabrics, she trained others how to sew, a craft that was
introduced by her mother, and one she perfected.
Following her retirement, Jewel continued to hem, stitch, and sew for family and
community. Every seam in her work was marked by love and precision. She crafted
countless wedding, prom, and Easter dresses, and was the mastermind behind a
multitude of quilt designs.
She was a gifted gardener and baker with a memory full of recipes. Any visitor to her
home was invited to take a jar of something she had picked and preserved. She sang
soprano in the choir and performed numerous duets of favorite church hymns with her
sister. It was a Sunday morning blessing to hear them sing.
Jewel was lovingly known to her nieces and nephews—Kristi Sasser, Mary Sasser
Owens (David), Stephanie Sasser Denmark (Adam), Martha Sasser, Amanda Sasser,
William Monroe Sasser Jr., Steven Sasser (Jessica), and Chase Sasser (Jennifer). She
also leaves behind ten grandnieces and nephews. All who will remember her fun and
adventurous nature, her generous spirit, and her willingness to do anything for those
she loved.
She is survived by her siblings William Monroe Sasser (Connie),
and Wayne Sasser (Betty), who will forever treasure the memories of their sister.
She was preceded in death and has been reunited with brothers Cecil Sasser, Donnie
R. Sasser (Jo), Steve E. Sasser, and her beloved sister, Betty Sasser.
Jewel was a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. She generously
shared her God given talents with all she knew and loved.
Jewel Sasser will be deeply missed.
Serving as pallbearers are: Will Sasser, Steven Sasser, Chase Sasser, Adam
Denmark, Ethan Pope, Brenden Douglas, and Russell Brand.
