Grover Hicks Jr., age 83, of Andalusia, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home on January 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 21, 1942, in Andalusia, Alabama. He graduated from Pleasant Home School in 1961 and went on to Troy University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and his master’s degree in educational leadership.
Grover served as the Assistant Principal/Principal of Laurel Hill School from 1970–1996. He also coached the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at various times during those years. In 1996 he moved to Panama City Beach, Florida and became the assistant coach of the girls’ basketball team at Gulf Coast Community College until he retired.
He was preceded in death by his parents, P.G. and Susie Hicks; Brother-in-law, Lamar Foley; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his partner in life, Mary “Roonie” Scovel; daughter, Kelli Howard (Ted); son, Scott Hicks (Shellie); his grandchildren, Madison Howard and Caleb Hicks; two sisters, Mary Sue Foley and Sara King (Eddie); two nieces and two nephews; special family friends, Connie Norwood and Jackie Scovel; as well as numerous cousins and extended family members.
The family wishes to thank caregivers Jackie Scovel, Paige McCallum, Sharon Shipman, Connie Norwood and Gentiva Hospice Health Care for their compassion and support during this difficult journey.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the Carolina Baptist Church: Family Life Center – 17745 Rockhole Bridge Road – Andalusia, Alabama. The family will receive friends from 11am–1:30pm with the service immediately after at 1:30pm.
Grover’s generous spirit touched countless lives. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership that shaped careers and cultivated future leaders. We will always carry his memory in our hearts.
