Lt. Col. Donnie Hugh Hester, (U.S. Marines, Retired), of Andalusia passed away Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the Andalusia hospital.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, April 27, 2019 at New Providence Baptist Church in the Paul community. Pastor Tommy Green will officiate. Interment will follow in the New Providence Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors. The U.S. Marine Honor Guard team will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Edson, Chance Smith, Colt Smith, Court Smith, Mitchell Meyers, Trey Short and Triston Kennedy. Keahey Funeral Home of Andalusia is entrusted with arrangements.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 26th at Keahey Funeral Home of Andalusia.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 24 years, Karen R. Hester; son, Master Sargent Benjamin C. (Destiny) Hester of North Carolina; daughter, Donnie Renae Mitchell of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Charles Hester, Jacob Hester, Zachary Mitchell, Conner Mitchell; one great-grandchild, Oliver Mitchell; brothers, Steve (Sharm) Smith of Texas; Gerald (Stacie) Smith of Utah, and Buddy (Becky) McCollum; and chinese pug, Pookie II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Lois Johnson Hester; brothers, John Ansley and Mack Ansley; sisters, Faye Ansley and Glenda Hester. Lt. Col. Hester retired after 20 years of faithful service in the U.S. Marines. He completed many tours in other countries and was stationed in Vietnam twice. He upheld his commission to serve and protect to the highest degree. After retirement, he enjoyed many fishing and hunting adventures and spent much time outdoors. He cherished time with his family. The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Gloria Shiver and Mary Jo Hester.
