David Michael Olesen

Mr. David Michael Olesen, age 63, of Opp passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at his residence.  Dave was born and raised in Iowa, the third of five children. He was a graduating member of the class of 1973 from South Winneshiek Community High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army that same year. He served his country as a communications repairman in Germany and was honorably discharged in July of 1976. He had a year or so of wanderlust that was satisfied by hitchhiking out to the Rocky Mountains, meeting new people and experiencing new things. He eventually settled in the Ames, Iowa area and worked in the roofing industry for many years.

Dave moved to Southwest Florida in the late 80's, then to LA (Lower Alabama) in 2005, but he never lost his enthusiasm for all things Iowa - especially its two biggest college sports teams - he was a great fan of both the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones, be it basketball or football.  Dave also loved his "Cubbies", the Chicago Cubs. He was so proud of their World Series triumph - you would have thought he was part owner.

Dave loved classical music, fantasy novels, online games, playing cards and cribbage. He had no children of his own, but he treated his pets like they were his kids. Dave was a nature lover, be it the landscape, the weather, or the wildlife. Dave leaves behind two sisters, and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. We will surely miss him and his zany humor.

Memorialization is by cremation.  Keahey Funeral Home of Andalusia is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of David Michael Olesen.
